The Impact of Literacy

Literacy is linked to higher self-esteem, better communication skills, and life achievement. Higher Literacy levels lead to better work outcomes, health and parenting skills. It opens doors to understanding, empathy, critical thinking, and the capacity for lifelong learning, especially for children. But many of Canada’s children are being left behind. When parents are struggling to put food on the table, they can’t easily provide resources for their children’s success.

In 2022, Literacy Now has handed out over 3,000 books to more than 500 families and individuals through our “Literacy Hampers” at local Burnaby food hubs. Not only are tireless volunteers handing out thousands of children’s books, but people of all ages can get brand new and donated books to enjoy, including New York Times bestsellers, science books, whole university courses, puzzles, games, writing materials, audiobooks, DVDs, etc.

Hampers also contain The West Coast Reader, colouring books and pencils for kids, and information resources provided by local community service organizations and nonprofits.
