Voting In The 2025 Federal Election

Canada’s federal election is coming up this month! Are you prepared to vote? You’ll be voting for your riding’s Member of Parliament (MP). The leader of the political party with the most elected MPs will become Prime Minister. In this blog, find when and where to vote.

Who Can Vote?

To vote in the Canadian federal election, you have to be:

  • A Canadian citizen (Permanent Residents cannot vote)
  • 18 years or older on April 28, 2025

You’ll also need to prove your identity and address. If you can vote, you should have received a “Voter Information Card.” This card tells you when and where to vote. You can register to vote, check if you’re registered to vote, and update incorrect information here. You can also call Elections Canada at 1-800-463-6868 for help with the Voter Information Card.

Vote By Mail

If you prefer, you can request to vote by mail. You have to apply to vote by mail by April 22 at 6 pm and your completed ballot must be received by Elections Canada by April 28.

Where Can I Find Information About Candidates?

Knowing who your candidates are and what they support is a very important part of voting. The Voter Information Service also lists the names, websites, and phone numbers of the candidates for your riding. It’s easiest to enter your postal code to find the information.

You can also find write-ups from the candidates at votemate.org. You enter your postal code or the name of your riding to see what candidates have written about themselves.

Local news also often does interviews or articles about candidates. In the past, the Burnaby Now has offered these.

Make sure you vote! This is how you get to shape your community and Canada’s future. Each vote makes a difference and voting is your right and duty as a Canadian citizen.
