September is Literacy Month in British Columbia, and communities all across the province are celebrating the joy of reading and learning. This year, Literacy Now Burnaby is proud to support the “Give a Book. Give Literacy.”campaign led by Decoda Literacy Solutions.
The theme for 2025 is “Literacy: The Ripple Effect.” Just like a single drop of water can create ripples that spread outward, one donated book can spark inspiration, open opportunities, and ripple through families, neighbourhoods, and communities.
Why Give Books?
Literacy is more than reading—it’s confidence, equity, and connection. Strong literacy skills support everything from employment to health, food security, and inclusion. By donating a book, you’re not just sharing a story or information —you’re helping build a more literate, resilient B.C.
How You Can Take Part
There are two main ways to join the Give a Book. Give Literacy campaign:
- Donate a Book
- Drop off a new or gently used book at a literacy group, neighbourhood house, or shelter.
- Check the Give Books list to see what organizations need and how to donate.
- Make a Gift
- Can’t donate books directly? You can donate online to support literacy programs across B.C.
- Spread the Word
- Every book counts—but so does every share. Post a photo or note on Instagram about your donation using the hashtag #GiveABookBC, and tag @DecodaLiteracy to inspire others. Together, we can turn small ripples into one great wave of change.
Literacy in Burnaby
Here in Burnaby, Literacy Now and our partners at Burnaby Neighbourhood House know how powerful a single book can be. Each year, we see the joy on children’s faces when they discover a story in their own language, or the confidence in adults who grow their skills with supportive resources.
This September, let’s keep the ripple going. Give a book. Give literacy.
