The start of every June is Canadian Environment Week. This is a week to promote environmental conservation and protection, and is a great reminder to appreciate the nature around us. This year’s theme is ending plastic pollution.
We need to take action because the climate crisis is changing our lives. It’s causing more extreme weather events, loss of biodiversity, and is threatening to change the Earth forever. It’s our duty to the planet and to other species to do everything we can to stop it. As this year’s theme is ending plastic pollution, reducing our plastic consumption is one of the first steps. What are some ways to use less plastic and to be a more conscious consumer overall? We’ve included a few ideas below.
- Refuse single use cutlery when getting take out
- Buy reusable, long lasting items
- Only buy what you need
- Buy food in bulk or shop at zero waste stores like The Soap Dispensary and the source bulk foods
- Join or organize a shoreline cleanup
- Reuse or recycle plastic products
You can learn more about what we need to do and how to take these steps at TedEd’s Earth School. Aside from offering relevant videos and information on the actions that need to be taken, it offers a certificate for completing 30 lessons.
