Summer is here! Children of all ages are invited to join a free, fun-filled journey of reading that celebrates every voice, every story, and every language. From Burnaby to Vancouver, Fraser Valley to Victoria, libraries across British Columbia are hosting the BC Summer Reading Club (BC SRC) under the cheerful theme “Colour Your Summer.”
The BC Summer Reading Club is a province-wide literacy initiative that encourages kids to keep reading during the summer months—at home, on vacation, or right at their local library. Open to all children, the program invites participants to:
- Read anything, anywhere, in any language
- Set their own reading goals
- Track their progress using fun reading logs
- Earn a medal at the end of summer
It’s more than a reading challenge—it’s a celebration of curiosity, culture, and creativity.
When children complete their reading goals—whether it’s five books or fifty—they can visit their local library in late August to receive a special Summer Reading Club medal. For many families, it’s a moment of pride and celebration. Many libraries also host end-of-summer parties and events to wrap up the season with a story-filled smile.
Have the whole family join the fun!

- Set aside a reading time each day—even 10–15 minutes makes a difference.
- Join your child by reading aloud or talking about books together.
- Visit your library weekly—many branches offer crafts, drop-in activities, or storytimes.
- Explore different formats like audiobooks, e-books, and graphic novels.
- Use the reading tracker to celebrate progress and milestones!
One of the most beautiful aspects of the BC Summer Reading Club is its inclusivity: children are encouraged to read in any language—whether it’s English, French, Spanish, Italian, Punjabi, Mandarin, Japanese, Farsi, or the language spoken at home. This is especially meaningful in diverse communities like Burnaby and the Lower Mainland, where multilingual families are part of the region’s cultural fabric.
The BC Summer Reading Club is more than a fun activity—it’s a powerful way to:
- Prevent the “summer slide” in reading skills
- Strengthen family bonds through shared stories
- Celebrate culture and language
- Inspire a lifelong love of reading
So whether your child is flipping through comics, listening to a bedtime audiobook, or reading a fairy tale in their mother tongue—they’re part of something bigger. Let’s colour this summer with imagination, one page at a time.
