Mental Health: What It Is, and Where to Find Help in Burnaby

Mental health is an important part of our lives, and an important part of our health. Keep reading to learn what it is, some habits to develop good mental health, and find free and paid, easy to access resources in Burnaby.

What is Mental Health?

Mental health refers to your psychological, social, and emotional well-being. It is important because it helps you cope with stress and changes how you interact with the world, which can positively or negatively affect your life. Mental health is not the same as mental illnesses, which cause distress and impede your ability to function.

Habits for Good Mental Health

Exercise: go for a walk, sign up for a class at a recreation centre, go swimming, bike, learn more here

Eat healthy food: eat vegetables, fruits, nuts, fish – there’s lots online

Drink enough water: for most people, 8 cups of water per day is not enough. How much water you drink depends on your environment and activity, and you can learn more online

Get enough sleep: to calculate how much you need, this is a helpful resource: https://www.healthline.com/health/sleep/sleep-calculator#bottom-line

Spend time with other people: set up a time to talk to a friend, have a family meal, talk to a coworker, say hello to someone when you walk past them on the street

Practice gratitude: write down something you’re grateful for each day
